SereniOxy Project: Technological Innovation Serving Respiratory Health

NM3D Ibérica leads a project that represents a significant breakthrough at the intersection of precision engineering, additive manufacturing, and healthcare. The SereniOxy initiative, co-financed by COMPETE 2030, aims to improve adherence to non-invasive respiratory therapies through the development of customised masks tailored to each patient’s facial anatomy.

A real challenge: enhancing comfort and therapeutic effectiveness

Respiratory diseases are a major global public health challenge, affecting millions and seriously impacting quality of life. For many conditions — such as asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) or sleep apnea — non-invasive ventilation is an essential treatment.

However, traditional masks have several drawbacks:

- Prolonged discomfort

- Skin injuries caused by pressure

- Increased risk of infections

- And above all, low patient adherence to treatment

This is the context in which SereniOxy was born: a user-centred, technologically advanced and functional solution.

The solution: customised oronasal masks using additive manufacturing

The project’s innovation lies in producing customised oronasal masks developed through 3D scanning of each patient’s face. This approach allows perfect anatomical fit, resulting in:

- Greater comfort

- Reduced air leakage risk

- Significant reduction of injuries

- Improved treatment effectiveness

Additive manufacturing (3D printing) technology is integrated into the development process, enabling a high degree of customisation and precision.

Multidisciplinary consortium and technological collaboration

SereniOxy exemplifies structured collaboration across engineering, healthcare, and industry. The project brings together partners with complementary skills, fostering knowledge transfer and accelerating the development of innovative solutions with direct clinical application.

According to Nuno Costa, CEO of NM3D Ibérica and project coordinator:

“The support from COMPETE 2030 has been fundamental in enabling this structured collaboration, accelerating knowledge transfer, modernising processes, and bringing engineering closer to clinical reality, with a focus on improving patient well-being.”

NM3D Ibérica: innovation with real impact

As consortium leader, NM3D Ibérica applies its expertise in 3D metrology, reverse engineering and additive manufacturing to develop a final product that goes beyond technical precision — effectively enhancing the patient experience.

A new era for respiratory therapy

The SereniOxy project reinforces NM3D Ibérica’s commitment to socially impactful innovation. We believe that engineering, combined with research and cross-sector collaboration, can play a key role in transforming healthcare and improving quality of life.
