NM3D Ibérica leads SereniOxy, a COMPETE 2030 co-funded initiative aimed at improving adherence to non-invasive respiratory therapies through the development of personalized masks adapted to each patient's physiognomy.

Context and challenge

Respiratory diseases represent one of the greatest global public health challenges, affecting millions of people and seriously compromising their quality of life. In conditions such as Asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), or Sleep Apnea, non-invasive ventilation is an essential treatment. However, the use of traditional masks has revealed several limitations: prolonged discomfort, pressure-induced skin lesions, increased risk of infections, and, above all, low patient adherence to treatment.

The solution or technology

The project's innovation lies in the production of personalized oronasal masks, developed from a three-dimensional scanning (3D scanning) process of each patient's face. This approach enables a perfect anatomical fit, resulting in greater comfort, reduced risk of air leaks, significant reduction in lesions, and increased treatment efficacy. Additive manufacturing technology (3D printing) is integrated into the development process, allowing a high degree of personalization and precision. SereniOxy is an example of structured collaboration between different knowledge areas: engineering, healthcare, and industry. According to Nuno Costa, CEO of NM3D Ibérica and project coordinator: "COMPETE 2030 support has been fundamental in enhancing this structured collaboration, enabling accelerated knowledge transfer, process modernization, and bringing engineering closer to clinical reality, with a focus on improving patient well-being."

Industrial applications

The project is intended for patients with respiratory diseases requiring non-invasive ventilation, including Asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), and Sleep Apnea.

Results and benefits

Personalized masks provide greater comfort, reduced risk of air leaks, significant reduction in skin lesions, decreased risk of infections, and increased treatment efficacy, resulting in improved therapeutic adherence by patients.

How NM3D can help

As consortium leader, NM3D Ibérica integrates all its know-how in three-dimensional metrology, reverse engineering, and additive manufacturing into this project, aiming to develop a final product that goes beyond technical precision — one that effectively improves the patient experience. The SereniOxy project reinforces NM3D Ibérica's commitment to innovation with social impact.
