Rapid technological evolution and increasing demands for quality and efficiency in the automotive industry have put traditional design and dimensional control methods to the test. In the context of Industry 4.0, 3D digitization has emerged as a fundamental tool for developing digital twins — highly accurate digital replicas of physical parts and components.

Context and challenge

The application of 3D digitization in the automotive industry brings concrete benefits: efficient recording of changes across different design versions, automated part inspection with significant time savings, and flexibility to ensure quality from external suppliers. For the technology to be effective in this sector, it must combine characteristics such as high precision, high efficiency, large measurement volume, ability to capture complex surfaces or hard-to-reach areas, and adaptability to dark or reflective surfaces.

The solution or technology

Product Development: The design of a new automobile evolves from manual sketches to full-scale technical drawings (tape drawings), converted into three-dimensional models. In advanced phases, 1:1 scale clay modeling is used. With compact and portable scanners like the SIMSCAN, it is possible to capture the contours of physical models with high fidelity. This equipment, with a digitization area of 410×400 mm and accuracy up to 0.025 mm, allows physical models to be transformed into detailed point clouds — the foundation for the digital twin. Automated Inspection of Stamped Parts: With the AutoScan-T solution, it is possible to verify surface deformations, hole diameter and positioning, distances between elements, and part limits and contours accurately and quickly. This system supports measurement rates up to 1.9 million points per second, with 0.025 mm accuracy, without the need for physical contact or markers. Integration with process control statistics enables identification of dimensional variation causes, establishment of production limits, and application of corrective actions. Supplier Quality Assurance: With portable scanners like the KSCAN-Magic, engineers can perform inspections directly at supplier facilities. This multifunctional scanner offers five digitization modes, including large areas, fine details and deep cavities, accuracy up to 0.020 mm, and the ability to easily capture complex surfaces or narrow spaces.

Industrial applications

3D digitization solutions apply to product development (from sketch to 3D model and digital twin), automated inspection of stamped metal parts in mass production, and quality control of components supplied by third parties, both at supplier facilities and in-house factories.

Results and benefits

Efficient recording of changes across different design versions, automated inspection with significant time savings, flexibility to ensure quality from external suppliers, identification of dimensional deviations at early stages, continuous stability and quality without systematic manual inspections, and accelerated production cycle with cost reduction.
