Industrial computed tomography is a nondestructive inspection technology that uses X-rays to capture detailed images of the interior of components. Unlike conventional techniques, industrial CT digitally reconstructs the complete geometry of the part, allowing three-dimensional analysis without cuts or invasive preparation.

The solution or technology

Industrial CT equipment, such as that supplied by Nikon Metrology through NM3D Ibérica, generates multiple radiographs while the part rotates on a stage. Software processes those projections and reconstructs a volumetric model that can be virtually sectioned in any plane. This approach reveals porosity, cracks, inclusions and density variations that would be invisible to surface metrology.

Beyond defect detection, tomography enables internal dimensional measurement, CAD comparison and assembly analysis without disassembly. Resolution depends on part size and the detector; current systems achieve sub-micrometric detail on small components and analyse parts weighing tens of kilograms with adjusted resolution.

Industrial applications

In the aerospace industry, industrial tomography is used to inspect welds, cast components and composite parts, ensuring absence of critical defects before final assembly. In the automotive sector, the technology verifies integrity of engine blocks, cylinder heads, crankcases and electronic components.

Metal additive manufacturing requires rigorous inspection to detect porosity, lack of fusion and geometric deviations in parts produced by laser sintering or electron beam melting. Industrial CT allows validation of internal quality without compromising production batches.

Tooling and mould manufacturers use X-rays to check cooling channels, wall thicknesses and insert assemblies, avoiding premature failures. In electronics, the technology identifies solder defects, delaminations and incorrect component placement on printed circuit boards.

How NM3D can help

NM3D Ibérica provides X-ray and computed tomography equipment from Nikon Metrology, suitable for different part volumes, resolutions and industrial applications. The technical team supports selection of the system best suited to each need, considering material type, dimensions, required resolution and production cadence.

In addition to equipment supply, NM3D Ibérica offers specialised inspection and tomography services, enabling companies to access the technology without an upfront capital investment. Analysis reports include defect identification, dimensional measurements and comparison with technical specifications.

Support includes installation, calibration, operator training and preventive maintenance. Local technical assistance ensures reduced response times and operational continuity in critical production environments.
