Industrial 3D scanning is becoming more mobile and flexible. The NimbleTrack Gen2, introduced by Scanology, combines a 3D scanner and an optical tracking system in a wireless solution designed to measure parts of different sizes without relying on reference markers.
This approach enables taking the measurement to the part and reduces the preparation required for inspection, assembly and dimensional control tasks.
Context and challenge
In industrial environments, not all parts can be moved to a metrology room. Bulky components, mounted structures or areas with restricted access require equipment that can work close to production.
At the same time, result quality depends on measurement stability, the ability to track the object and how easily the operator can cover surfaces, holes and details.
The solution or technology
The NimbleTrack Gen2 uses an optical tracker to follow the scanner in real time. According to the manufacturer, the system can operate cable-free using batteries, onboard computing and wireless data transmission.
There are modes for fast scanning, fine detail and measurement of deep holes. The NimbleTrack-E Gen2 version offers a tracking distance of up to 4.2 meters. The manufacturer states a measurement rate of up to 6.63 million points per second and a system accuracy of up to 0.025 mm, depending on configuration and operating conditions.
The tracker can also be used as a large-area scanner. This combination allows adapting the process to the part size without changing measurement platforms.
Industrial applications
The system can support component inspection, CAD comparison, structure assembly and reverse engineering. Sectors indicated by the manufacturer include automotive, aerospace, molds, energy, heavy industry, rail and shipbuilding.
With optional accessories, it can also track object position in six degrees of freedom or measure hard-to-reach points with an optical probe.
Results and benefits
The absence of cables and markers reduces preparation steps and eases movement around the part. Adaptive photogrammetry seeks to maintain measurement consistency at short and long distances, while the different scanning modes allow balancing speed, detail and coverage area.
In practice, the choice of configuration should consider part size, tolerances, environment, surface access and the type of report required.
