NM3D Ibérica has distinguished itself in the quality control and inspection sector in Portugal and Spain, offering innovative advanced metrology solutions supported by Nikon Computed Tomography (CT) technology, ensuring precision and efficiency essential for diverse industries. As Nikon's official representative in these countries, NM3D has consolidated its leadership position, providing a unique combination of precision, efficiency and non-destructive analysis, essential for industries such as automotive, aerospace and electronics.
Context and challenge
Nuno Amaral, Area Sales Manager at NM3D, highlights that the company's customer-centric approach is one of NM3D's unique selling points. Rather than simply offering measurement equipment packages, NM3D develops customized metrology solutions that meet each customer's specific needs. Additionally, he emphasizes the high level of after-sales support, training and service as one of the company's differentiators.
The solution or technology
NM3D uses Nikon CT systems with advanced technologies. Nikon's X.Tend helical data acquisition system significantly improves resolution and edge definition in most samples, being especially useful when inspecting tall samples with laminar structure. NM3D uses internally four Nikon microfocus CT scanning systems reserved for subcontract inspection, including a large envelope machine to investigate large components. Nikon's Rotating.Target 2.0, used in the XT H 225 ST 2x system, efficiently dissipates heat generated by the small focal spot, enabling continuous generation of high-power X-rays, resulting in a dramatic increase in scanning speed and resolution. Other Nikon targets, such as the reflection target, transmission target and multimetal target, are regularly used for material analysis. Nikon's proprietary X-ray sources play a crucial role in the ability to provide suitable solutions for increasingly demanding customer challenges.
Industrial applications
The team in Vila Nova de Cerveira helped a customer improve capacitor production. Through 3D computed tomography, the customer was able to visualize the interior of the capacitor for the first time, without needing to cut and destroy it as was done previously. With this, they managed to anticipate air bubble formation during production and adjust line parameters, saving significantly on scrap. In another application, NM3D used computed tomography to analyze connectors that power electric vehicle (EV) batteries, verifying contacts and assessing the propensity for loosening during vehicle use. The ability to identify internal defects such as porosities, cracks and inclusions is crucial to ensure product safety and durability, especially in the aerospace, automotive and medical sectors.
Results and benefits
Computed tomography offers a unique combination of precision, efficiency and non-destructive analysis, redefining metrology standards in the manufacturing industry. The technology enables visualization of component interiors without destruction, anticipation of defects during production, adjustment of line parameters and significant savings on scrap. The development of new technologies and their integration with automation and artificial intelligence promises even more advances, contributing not only to improving product quality but also to sustainability, making these methods indispensable in the industries of the future.
