Three-dimensional measurement of large industrial components and tools requires equipment capable of covering volumes of tens of meters with micrometric repeatability. The iLT Laser Tracker, developed by API Metrology, addresses this challenge in an ultracompact configuration: it weighs 4,9 kg, integrates controller and battery, and dispenses with power or communication cables.
Designed for applications in aerospace, energy, tooling and robotics, the iLT offers ranges from 25 to 80 m depending on version and the manufacturer-declared accuracy of ±15 µm + 7 µm/m on the iLT X model.
Context and challenge
A Laser Tracker measures 3D coordinates via laser interferometry, following a spherical reflector (SMR) or a handheld probe. The technology is suitable for alignment tasks, robot calibration, dimensional inspection of tooling and reverse engineering whenever the work volume exceeds the capability of a bridge CMM or requires mobility between stations.
The aerospace, automotive, heavy machinery and energy sectors use Laser Trackers to validate geometries of structures, position robotic cells and verify wear of large-scale tooling. The portability of the equipment allows bringing metrological capability to the factory floor or the assembly site, avoiding component transfers and reducing downtime.
The solution or technology
The iLT stands out for the full integration of controller, wireless communication system and internal battery in a 4,9 kg body. The absence of external units and cables eases transport in a single case and speeds station changes on production lines or shipyards.
The series is divided into two models: the iLT, with range up to 50 m and accuracy of ±25 µm + 15 µm/m, and the iLT X, which extends the action radius to 80 m and improves accuracy to ±15 µm + 7 µm/m. Both operate at 1 000 Hz and feature AutoLock, which automatically restores the laser beam after interruption within a 30° field of view.
The internal battery provides four hours of autonomy, extendable to eight hours with an external battery. Dual virtual leveling allows establishing the gravity reference with one click, removing the need for time-consuming mechanical leveling. The built-in meteorological station compensates temperature, pressure and humidity in real time, maintaining traceability in variable factory environments.
The equipment holds IEC 60529 certification for protection against dust and contaminants, enabling operation in workshops, hangars and assembly areas with less controlled conditions. The original warranty is two years, with the possibility of extension up to five years.
Industrial applications
The iLT applies to geometric alignment of metal structures, calibration of robotic cells and dimensional verification of molds and stamping tooling. In aerospace, it is used to control fuselage and wing geometries prior to drilling and riveting. In the automotive sector, it validates welding point positions and alignment of assembly lines.
Accessory integration expands the range of use. The vProbe handheld probe, wireless and ergonomic, allows probing internal features and cavities in complex parts. The iScan 3D scanner digitizes reflective and high-contrast surfaces, speeding reverse engineering and CAD comparison tasks. The Active Target automates tracking on machine tools, CNC machining centers and industrial robots, enabling dynamic calibrations and adaptive control.
The Smart Track Sensor (STS) reduces uncertainties in robot calibrations by providing real-time performance data. The system’s versatility covers sectors such as energy (turbines, generators), tooling (molds, fixtures), transport (trains, ships) and defence (armoured vehicles, weaponry).
Results and benefits
The extreme portability of the iLT reduces setup times and allows access to confined spaces where conventional equipment cannot fit. Cableless operation eliminates trip hazards in industrial environments and facilitates inspections at height or on mobile platforms.
The AutoLock function minimises productivity losses by automatically recovering the laser beam when operators or components intercept the measurement line. Active environmental compensation ensures traceability without the need for climate-controlled rooms, broadening applicability to real manufacturing contexts.
The eight-hour battery autonomy covers full shifts without recharging, suitable for field measurements or facilities without nearby electrical infrastructure. Integration of the controller and virtual leveling reduces the number of components to manage and accelerates the learning curve for new operators.
The micrometric accuracy declared by the manufacturer is retained over tens of metres, enabling inspection of large assemblies with controlled uncertainty. The dust-protection certification extends service life in adverse industrial environments.
How NM3D can help
NM3D Ibérica offers technical consultancy to size the Laser Tracker solution appropriate to the work volume, accuracy requirements and environmental conditions of each industrial project. The team supports the selection of accessories —tactile probes, laser scanners, active targets— according to the alignment, calibration or digitisation tasks planned.
The service includes practical demonstrations at the customer’s facilities, allowing validation of productivity and traceability gains prior to purchase. Technical training covers measurement routine programming, configuration of environmental compensations and preventive maintenance to maximise availability and equipment lifetime.
NM3D coordinates periodic calibrations and local technical support, reducing downtime and ensuring compliance with quality standards. Integration with existing metrology software and CAD/PLM systems is planned jointly, guaranteeing efficient workflows from data capture to deviation analysis and inspection reporting.
