Nuno Amaral, Area Sales Manager at NM3D, highlights that the company’s customer-centric approach is one of NM3D’s unique selling points. Instead of simply offering measurement equipment packages, NM3D develops customised metrology solutions tailored to the specific needs of each client. Additionally, he emphasises the high level of after-sales support, training, and service as one of the company's differentiators.
Nuno mentioned that a real-life example illustrating the value of the company’s solutions was when the team in Vila Nova de Cerveira helped a client improve capacitor production. Through 3D computed tomography, the client was able to visualise the inside of the capacitor for the first time, without the need to cut and destroy it as was done previously. This allowed them to anticipate air bubble formation during production and adjust the line parameters, significantly saving on scrap.
In another application, NM3D used computed tomography to analyse connectors that power electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The aim was to inspect the contacts and assess the risk of loosening during vehicle use. "Nikon’s proprietary X-ray sources play a crucial role in our ability to provide appropriate solutions for the increasingly demanding challenges of our clients," adds Nuno Amaral. "The ability to identify internal defects, such as porosities, cracks, and inclusions, is crucial to ensuring the safety and durability of products, especially in the aerospace, automotive, and medical sectors."
Amaral also praises Nikon’s X.Tend helical data acquisition system, which, according to him, significantly improves resolution and edge definition in most samples. "It is especially useful when inspecting tall samples with a laminar structure. We use this system internally in our four Nikon microfocus CT scanning systems reserved for subcontract inspection, including a large envelope machine for investigating large components."
Another standout component in NM3D’s portfolio is Nikon’s Rotating.Target 2.0, used in the XT H 225 ST 2x system. "The rotating tungsten target efficiently dissipates the heat generated by the small focal spot, allowing for continuous generation of high-power X-rays. This results in a dramatic increase in scanning speed and resolution", says Amaral. Other Nikon targets, such as the reflection target, transmission target, and multi-metal target, are regularly used for material analysis.
Nuno Amaral also sees great potential for the adoption of automated inspection solutions in the Iberian Peninsula.
